Expert group meeting to Address Inequalities and Challenges to Social Inclusion

In preparation for the fifty-seventh session of the Commission (CSocD57), the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) organized an expert group meeting on “Addressing inequalities and challenges to social inclusion through fiscal, wage and social protection policies”, from 25 to 27 June 2018 in New York.

Experts from various regions discussed trends in inequality from a global perspective and proposed policy recommendations to reduce income inequality, including of opportunity in various dimensions such as education, clean energy, and decant work, and promote social inclusion through fiscal, wage and social protection policies, in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

During the meeting, ESCAP presented its new and innovative work on inequality of opportunities and the methodology used to identify those furthest behind. ESCAP also highlighted key findings from the region and recommended policies to reduce inequality in access to basic services.
