Strategic Focus of the Trust Fund

Enhancing Early Warning Regional Cooperation
The Trust Fund deepens and extends regional cooperation mechanisms and partnerships to strengthen early warning systems for the benefit of high-risk and low capacity countries in the Indian Ocean and Pacific basins, particularly addressing transboundary hazards.

Strengthening “Last Mile” Early Warning Systems
The Trust Fund consolidates good practices and pilots new approaches to promote comprehensive people-centred multi-hazard early warning systems. Learning and sharing successful experiences equip countries in Asia-Pacific to expand the scope of their warning systems to underserved areas to ensure all residents have access to warning in the event of a hazard.

Investing in Climate Risk Management
The Trust Fund presents an important and cost-effective opportunity to contribute to development, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in the Asia-Pacific region. Alongside enhancing seasonal forecasting, long-term risk analysis and impact-based forecasting, the Trust Fund also develops tools for managing and adapting to El Niño/La Niña and drought, scaling up gains from ESCAP’s and other ongoing initiatives.
Harnessing Innovation, Science & Technology
The Trust Fund integrates state of the art communication, science and technology in disaster management and related fields, such as geo-informatics and space technology, to advance early warning systems. Enabling the application of innovation, science and technology supplements projects in high-risk, low capacity countries and ensures the “last mile” is covered.
