Asia-Pacific Commemoration of International Women’s Day 2018
In commemoration of International Women’s Day 2018, an Interactive Dialogue on “Time is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives” was held on 8 March 2018 in Bangkok. The commemoration was organized by the United Nations Asia-Pacific Regional Coordination Mechanism's Thematic Working Group on Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (RCM TWG-GEEW), co-chaired by ESCAP and UN Women. The regional commemoration featured a panel discussion focused on considering key challenges, gaps and opportunities to promoting gender equality, as well as the need for urgent action to expedite progress towards upholding women’s rights and achieving the 2030 Agenda.
The event featured a range of speakers from government, UN agencies and civil society working to advance critical levers of change to transform women’s lives: Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCAP, Dr. Miwa Kato, Regional Director, UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, H.E. Ms. Raushan Yesbulatova, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Kingdom of Thailand and Permanent Representative to ESCAP, Ms. Fiza Farhan, Member of the UN Secretary General’s High-Level Panel on Women’s Economic Empowerment, Ms. Mary Jane N. Real, Co-Director, Urgent Action Fund - Asia Pacific, Ms. Mahmuda Begum Shelly, Executive Director, Manob Progoti Shongho, Bangladesh and Ms. Ho Tran Thanh Huyen, Youth Programme Officer, Da Nang Youth Union, Viet Nam.
