Implementing the New Urban Agenda in Small Island Developing States (SIDS)

10 Feb 2018
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Co-hosted by ESCAP, ECLAC and UN-Habitat, this side event will convene high-level representatives from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to identify specific, shared challenges and opportunities across SIDS in their implementation of the New Urban Agenda, and to promote the need for a stronger regional approach, building on the existing Pacific and Caribbean Urban Agendas. Opportunities for inter and intra-regional coordination in implementing the NUA will also be identified. The side-event will feed SIDS issues into the SDG11 roundtables scheduled for the 2018 Asia-Pacific and Latin American Regional Forums on Sustainable Development convened by ESCAP and ECLAC and in advance of the 2018 High-Level Political Forum which will review progress against the cluster goals for ‘resilient communities.’ Pacific countries represented include Fiji, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.
