Asia-Pacific Day for the Ocean
8 November 2019, Bangkok
The second Asia Pacific Day for the Ocean will be held on 8 November 2019 in Bangkok. The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the will bring together stakeholders from across the region in preparation for the theme of its annual Commission session and the global UN “Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.”
Asia-Pacific is home to the most biologically diverse and productive marine ecosystems on Earth. Our oceans are a vital source of livelihood, nutrition and economic growth in the region and are essential to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Yet, the capacity of our ocean to sustain development is being jeopardized by pollution, overfishing and inadequate governance. Countries in Asia-Pacific are both major sources of ocean degradation and highly vulnerable to its impacts.
The Day for the Ocean 2019 will be an opportunity to review technological developments and scientific innovations that can contribute to a more sustainable management of our oceans and their ecosystems. This event will provide a space for communities to voice their concerns and help shape recommendations. It will foster partnerships, environmental participation, community engagement and regional cooperation.
The Second Asia Pacific Day for the Ocean will offer three parallel thematic sessions, which will provide participants with a specialized forum to present and exchange ideas on regional opportunities for the ocean. These sessions will address marine pollution, transport and fisheries, and highlight initiatives that promote economic, social and environmental cooperation with a focus on countries with special needs.
