Asia‐Pacific macroeconomic policy and financing for development meeting opens 6 November
6 to 8 November 2019, Bangkok, Thailand
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will bring together ministers and senior officials from Asia and the Pacific, as well as representatives of central banks and the public sector for the Committee on Macroeconomic Policy, Poverty Reduction and Financing for Development, to be held at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok from 6 to 8 November 2019.
Facilitated by rapid economic growth, the Asia-Pacific region has seen tremendous economic and social progress over the past several decades. However, preoccupation with economic growth has come at the cost of rising inequalities and environmental degradation. Worryingly, ESCAP analysis shows that the region is unlikely to reach most Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 in a “business-as-usual” scenario. There is an urgent need to shift the mindset and policy direction and raise ambitions beyond economic growth.
To translate ambitions into feasible policies and tangible outcomes, the second session of the Committee will discuss holistic and integrated approaches that can facilitate mainstreaming the SDGS into policymaking. The Committee will also deliberate on the importance of strong fiscal positions, which are backed by effective domestic tax systems and robust regional tax cooperation, to finance the investments needed to accelerate progress towards the SDGS. With particular focus on least developed countries and small island developing States, the Committee will also discuss how to leverage financing from a range of sources in the service of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.
