Promoting regional cooperation on the applications of space technology and geographic information systems for disaster risk reduction

Abstract

The present document outlines the secretariat's efforts to implement the Asia-Pacific Plan of Action for Applications of Space Technology and Geographic Information Systems for Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Development, 2012-2017. The Importance of regional cooperation in deepening and broadening the applications of space technology and geographic information systems for disaster risk reduction in the Asia-Pacific region are also highlighted. The key activities and achievements under the Regional Space Applications Programme for Sustainable Development and the Regional Cooperative Mechanism for Disaster Monitoring and Early Warning, Particularly Drought are further highlighted. The present document contains a brief overview of the secretariat's work in enhancing capacity-building for the developing countries in the region, within the context of using space-based information for disaster risk reduction, providing efficient and effective services to the countries affected by severe natural disasters, promoting the establishment and use for geo-referenced information systems for disaster management and enhancing partnerships with other international and regional initiatives. The Committee's guidance on enhancing regional cooperation in building resilience to disasters is also sought in the present document. A number of issues that the Committee may wish to consider are also presented.
